Sea Road School students took a WordMasters Challenge this morning. The task was made up of 20 analogies using the following 25 words:

façade, reduce, indelible, perplexity, inflame, skimpy, grace, fluster, scant, gist, enlighten, inept, dexterity, agitate, pithy, deception, gallivant, fidgety, hypocrite, rove, aimless, prophet, dilute, predictable and core.

Students have been studying these words since October. For more information about WordMasters you can go to www.wordmasterschallenge.com. Students will have 2 more sets of words to learn throughout the year.

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. MEGAT Conference

The Maine Educators of the Gifted and Talented (MEGAT) will hold their annual conference on November 10, 2008 at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston, Maine.

This year the conference is titled The Art of Sharing and will focus on sharing ideas and information about Gifted & Talented education and programs in the state, with an emphasis on the Arts.

Challenge of the Week

GATES Challenge of the Week (C.O.W.)

Each week we will be putting out a math challenge to the students of SRS. The purpose of the challenge is for students to have fun and recognize math all around. It offers an opportunity for students to take a different look at math. Students should seek help from friends, siblings, parents, and anyone else who is willing! If one problem becomes frustrating, it is all right to go on to the next problem. This is meant to be a voluntary activity and students may participate as often as they would like. A record is kept of the students who participate throughout the year and those who consistently hand in COWs will receive a certificate at the end of the year.
The challenges will be available each Thursday and due back no later than the following Tuesday. With each week's challenge you will find the answers to the previous week's challenge on the back. The questions primarily come from Continental Math League questions for 4^th and 5^th grade students. The first COW is due Tuesday, September 23rd. Good Luck! Have Fun!

Math Team Sign-Up

Sea Road School will once again have a 5^th grade team. We will compete against other schools in Southern Maine. I have been going into the 5^th grade classrooms to discuss the math team with students and answer any questions that they have about the team. Students are asked to sign up outside of my classroom this week if they are interested.

Although there are 4 meets during the year, I am letting students know that I cannot guarantee that I will be able to take everyone to the meets. During practices students will be given tasks from past meets and the highest performing students will attend the meets. Practices will be held once a week during lunch/recess.
