Welcome

Welcome to the new KES Library Blog!


With the start of 2007, I am beginning a new KES library blog that l hope you find useful.  The intent is to provide you with library related information through postings that may include announcements of special events, new books, book awards and weblinks.

You may view this weblog from the "District Blog" link on the MSAD 71 home page or you may subscribe and have the  updates delivered directly to you by entering your email address and clicking on the "subscribe me!" button.

KES Library Curriculum

    

Each KES class visits library once a week for thirty minutes.  The first fifteen minutes are for library/information skills instruction or a read aloud.  The second fifteen minutes are for book selection and check out.  Open library mornings are available twice a week for individual and small group research and general library use.  Here is what your child will be learning about in library this year.

Kindergarten
Library routine (lining up, checking out books, holding books safely, using the drop slot)
“No/No Never Box” - Taking care of books (clean hands, etc.)
Each child received a “books are my bag” plastic bag to keep in his/her back pack to protect library books
Pinch/Slide/Turn - Turning pages to prevent rips
How to browse for books with gentle hands
Read alouds

Grade 1
Library routine and taking care of materials – review
Each child received a “books are my bag” plastic bag to keep in his/her back pack to protect library books
Title/Author/Illustrator
Introduction to Fiction/Nonfiction
Read alouds

Grade 2
Library routine and taking care of library materials – review
Each child received a “books are my bag” plastic bag to keep in his/her back pack to protect library books
Hi-Ho-Librario (Parts of a book sung to “Farmer in the Dell”)
Arrangement of Fiction and Nonfiction in library
Support for classroom research projects – Countries, etc.
Read alouds

Grade 3
Review of library routine 
Fiction/nonfiction review
Using the OPAC (online public access catalog) to find books
Arrangement of fiction (by author's last name)
Arrangement of nonfiction (by Dewey Decimal System) 
Finding nonfiction using Dewey Decimal System
Features of nonfiction (timelines, diagrams, charts, captions, maps, sidebars, etc.)

Parts of a title page (publisher, place of publication, etc. ) All the parts of a book (copyright, publication, spine labels, etc.)
Using the table of contents to locate information
Using indexes to locate information (skimming, alphabetization, recognizing key words in a question)

How to do a bibliography (book, magazine, Internet, encyclopedia)

Support for classroom research projects – Endangered animals, etc.
