      <![CDATA[This week we will be finishing up reading <u>The Tale of Despereaux</u>.&nbsp; We had planned to take the class to see the movie.&nbsp; It is coming out in theaters on Friday the 19<sup>th</sup>.&nbsp; Because of the cut in school field trip funding, we will not be able to go.&nbsp; I encourage you to take your child to see the movie.&nbsp; It is a great story.<br /><span />In place of the field trip, on Friday we will be having a classroom reward.&nbsp; <br />This reward includes:<br />the viewing of Polar Express<br />a brief snack intermission for hot chocolate<br />a classroom pizza party<br />and an afternoon ice cream sundae party.&nbsp; <br /><span /><p>It will be the last day for a student in the classroom.&nbsp; The ice cream sundae party is in her honor.&nbsp; Please let me know if you would be able to send in some toppings.&nbsp; I will be supplying the ice cream.&nbsp; </p><span />We will have homework all week.&nbsp; <strong><u>Please be sure to check the planners because the daily assignments have been changed a bit.&nbsp; </u></strong>There will be a spelling test on Friday.&nbsp; There will be no homework next week.&nbsp; My early holiday gift to them.&nbsp; <br /><span />I hope you are well.&nbsp; <br />Mrs. C&nbsp; <br />]]>

FMI see page 14</p><p align="left">&nbsp;</p><p align="left">&nbsp;</p></font><strong><u>Classroom Garden</u></strong><br /><strong><u><p>&nbsp;</p></u></strong>Next week, we will be breaking ground with our classroom garden.&nbsp; A greenhouse has been put in behind the science room next door.&nbsp; We have been patiently waiting for the construction to be completed.&nbsp; It was neat to watch the process from beginning to end.&nbsp; We are now able to put a garden outside the three windows in our classroom.&nbsp;&nbsp; Starting next week, we will be beginning to work on the garden.&nbsp; We will be creating a 12 by 4 foot section.&nbsp;&nbsp; If you are interested in helping with this project, you can send in some bulbs or small plants that can be planted this late in the season.&nbsp; We do not claim to have green thumbs, but we are willing to give this a try.&nbsp; <br /><span />We are also interested in putting up suction cup clear bird feeders on our classroom window(s).&nbsp; If anyone would like to send in a feeder or bird seed, please feel free to contact me.&nbsp; Possibly there may be these items unused somewhere in your home? <br /><span />Thanks for your help in this project.&nbsp; If you are able to come into school for Immigration Day (4<sup>th</sup> grade, 10/31) or the Native American POW WOW (5<sup>th</sup> grade, 11/7), you can take a peek at our progress.&nbsp; With a little help from Mother Nature, we will see some flowers in the spring!<br /><span />Mrs. C <br />]]>

Our toy drive for cancer victims will continue for the next couple of weeks. We are accepting any new toys for children ages 2-15. Send your donation into the office. Oct. 31 Immigration Event</u></strong>- Students are asked to dress as immigrants when they come to school that morning. Girls should wear long skirts or dresses with a shawl or wrap. Boys are to wear knickers (pants tucked into high socks), collared shirts and vests or suspenders if possible. They will be taking part in a simulation of what it might have been like to pass through Ellis Island between 1880-1910. Students are asked to bring a basket or sack also. Parents are invited to attend the activities which start at 8:45. Students may also bring in food from the country they are researching. This part is totally optional. <br /></font><p><font size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><font size="3"><strong><u>Thurs. Nov. 6, the</u></strong> <strong><u>fourth graders</u></strong> will be traveling by bus for an in-district field trip to the <strong>Kennebunk/Kennebunkport/ Wells Water District Water Treatment Plant</strong>. This is in conjunction with our current science unit, Watery Earth. There we will tour the drinking water plant. Our class will be in two groups, and the entire visit will last about 45 minutes. We will learn about the Branch Brook Watershed, how the groundwater aquifer works, and the process by which water from the river becomes our town's drinking water. We thank the water district for sharing their time and expertise with us, as we learn first hand where our water comes from.       <![CDATA[<strong><u>Thank you families for sending in the delicious apples!<br /></u></strong><span />My lesson for the day&hellip;..how to use a peeler.&nbsp; <br />Peeling an apple is not an easy skill to teach!<br /><span />It was fun to watch some of the kids persist at getting their one apple peeled.&nbsp; While we were peeling the apples, some of the kids were easily distracted by the cement truck outside our classroom window.&nbsp; It was pouring cement for the school greenhouse.&nbsp; It has been fun to watch the daily progress.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><span />Later in the day, we had a great class lunch.&nbsp; &nbsp;After recess, we shared the applesauce we made.&nbsp; We had so much fun, the class is eager to plan our next class event.&nbsp; I will keep you posted.<br /><span />Have a great 3 day weekend!<br /><span />Mrs. C<br />]]>

      <![CDATA[Dear Families:<br /><span />Starting today, your child will be bringing home a daily planner.&nbsp; <br /><span />During each school day, <u>each child is responsible for</u> writing in the planner assignments that are due, school reminders and upcoming events.&nbsp; <br /><span />Every evening, <u>each family is responsible for</u> initialing the planner at the bottom.&nbsp; <br /><span />The planner will go home daily with the school folder.&nbsp; Both the folder and the planner need to be brought back to school each day.&nbsp; <br /><span />This is a great way to learn organizational skills and to keep informed of your child&rsquo;s school lessons.&nbsp; <br /><span />Thank you for your help and please contact me if you have any question.<br /><span /><p>Mrs. C</p><span /><p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">In <strong>Writing</strong>, the class is currently working on an assignment about their three favorite fall activities.&nbsp; Upon completion, a copy of this assignment will be sent home.&nbsp; </font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">In <strong>Reading</strong>, each student is working on reading materials assigned in their grade level homerooms. 4th graders are reading <u>Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson</u>, some 5<sup>th</sup> graders are reading <u>Hatchet </u>while another class is reading <u>Something Upstairs.&nbsp; </u>We also have a classroom book called <u>Three Good Deeds.&nbsp;</u>&nbsp;</font></font></p><p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman"><span /></font></font><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">In <strong>Science</strong>, 5<sup>th</sup> grade students are learning about Energy and 4<sup>th</sup> graders are learning about Watery earth.</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">In <strong>Social Studies</strong>, 5th graders are beginning research on their Native American Tribes.&nbsp; Their posters will be done here at school.&nbsp; The 5<sup>th</sup> grade PowWow is on Nov 7<sup>th</sup>.&nbsp; 4<sup>th</sup> graders will begin lessons on Immigration.&nbsp; Their Immigration Day is October 31<sup>st</sup>.&nbsp; </font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Other classroom activities include&hellip;. </font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">starting our day with <u>Jump Start</u> (led by our school occupational therapist, Mrs. Camire).&nbsp; Students are working on getting their body and mind ready for the school day.&nbsp; Some of these exercises can be done later in the day if a child finds he/she needs a pick up or a slow down.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Daily Oral Language lessons to practice grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling skills.&nbsp; </font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">And DEAR (<strong>D</strong>rop <strong>E</strong>verything <strong>a</strong>nd <strong>R</strong>ead) Time.</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">I have sent home an updated schedule for each child.&nbsp; If needed, this may be changed a bit over the school year.&nbsp; You may want to tape it into your child&rsquo;s planner.&nbsp; </font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman"><strong><u>Dates to remember</u></strong>:</font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Oct 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 are Early Release Days.&nbsp; This will give staff here an opportunity to get trained in SmartBoard use, math and special education services. &nbsp;</font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">No school October 13th</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.&nbsp; </font></font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Mrs. C</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></p> <p></p>]]>

      <![CDATA[<p>This has been a terrific start to the 2008-2009 school year.&nbsp; I have had the opportunity to speak to each family to answer any questions you may have and let you know how your child is adjusting to life back at school. <br /><span /></p><p>I am looking forward to seeing you at the <strong><u>Sea</u></strong><strong><u> </u></strong><strong><u>Road</u></strong><strong><u> </u></strong><strong><u>School</u></strong><strong><u> Open House on Monday, September 15<sup>th</sup></u></strong>.&nbsp; Remember, this is an <u>adult only event</u>.&nbsp; Fourth grade teachers are available from 6:30 to 7:15 and 5<sup>th</sup> grade teachers will be available from 7:30 to 8:15.&nbsp; Each teacher will be giving a presentation of what that room/grade level will be covering this school year.&nbsp; I will be in my room from 6:30 to 8:15.&nbsp; Feel free to take a look around the building, in the allied art rooms and drop in to visit the Resource Room.&nbsp; <br /></p><span /><p>Reminders&hellip;..<br /><span /><strong><u>&nbsp;</u></strong></p><p><strong><u>Picture Day</u></strong> is this <u>Wednesday, September 17<sup>th</sup></u>.&nbsp; Please be sure to return your picture order form and money.&nbsp; <br /></p><span /><p><strong><u>Sea Road has gone paperless</u></strong>.       <![CDATA[<p>Through this blog, I will keep you up&nbsp;to date with Resource Room classroom activites.&nbsp; I will also post information regarding school wide&nbsp;4th and 5th grade level curriculum activites and field trips.&nbsp;&nbsp; </p><p>In social studies the 4th graders will be learning about Ellis Island/Immigration and the 5th graders will be studying Native Americans.&nbsp; On Friday the 31st of October, all 4th graders will be immigrating to the United States.&nbsp; On Friday November 7th, the 5th graders will be displaying their Native American posters.&nbsp; Families are encourgaged to attend.&nbsp; More details will follow.&nbsp; </p><p>More dates to note...</p><p>Wednesday, September 10th is Early Dismissal </p><p>Monday, September 15th is our Open House</p><p>I am looking forward to another great school year at Sea Road.&nbsp;&nbsp; </p><p>Mrs. C</p>]]>
