Today, we are back on schedule. There has been one change. The spelling test for today has been moved to next Tuesday. With yesterday's events, we fell behind in some spelling assignments.
No homework next week. Please still have your child review their words. Please continue to check the planners. This is a great way for me to update you with any changes in the schedule.
School will be held (weather permitting) on Monday and Tuesday of next week. The school will be closed Wednesday, December 24th. School will resume on Monday, January 5th.

It will be the last day for a student in the classroom. The ice cream sundae party is in her honor. Please let me know if you would be able to send in some toppings. I will be supplying the ice cream.

'Tis the season and we are in need of boxes of tissues. Other items we could use are plastic silverware (spoons mostly) and cups for hot beverages. We will occasionaly indulge in hot chocolate, especially on days like today.

]]>Also, the Holiday Fair is tomorrow. Your child can go to the fair for 20 minutes during school hours. Students will go with my class in the morning. If you would like, you can shop with your child after school hours (2:45 to 5 p.m.). No child can attend the fair without adult supervision.
Finally, there is an early release day on Wednesday, December 10th.

]]>With the winter weather upon us, please be sure your child has a hat, gloves, a warm coat. When the time comes, they will need snow pants and boots to go in the snow. Without snow pants and boots, a student will have to remain on the plowed pavement during recess time.
Did you know you can keep up with what your child orders for lunch and find out if there is a balance????
Go to msad71.net and click on food services (located on the right side). This will lead you to a mynutrikids.com link. Click on this link and you can log in and create an account. This way you can see what your child ordered at school (not what he/she ate though) and see if money is due to the school lunch program.
Holiday Fair on Thursday, December 4th
For the Holiday fair, the Resource Room will be providing a Counting Contest. All the students at Sea Road can take a guess. We will make the posters, provide the guess slips, count the items and finally, bring the ice cream reward party supplies to the winning homeroom. More info on the Holiday Fair will follow.
The POWWOW will be from 930-2 tomorrow (Friday, November 7th). Our class will be going from 10-1015. Please feel free to join us or come at a different time during the day. The 5th graders have worked very hard on their Native American posters. The posters will be sent home one day next week.

COST: FREE-Parental Supervision is mandatory
Come on over and see what we have in store for all the
little ghosts and goblins of Kennebunk. Every child that
enters the hall is encouraged to sign up for a free raffle for
chance at winning one of several prizes drawn at the end
their age group’s party. No registration is required,
however, parental supervision is mandatory. We willhave a magic show, over a dozen new and returning
carnival games, moon bounce, giant slide, refreshments,
and lots of candy!!!!
Please take note: This department schedules two
separate age appropriate parties due to the fact that all
our volunteers will be dressed in a fun costume for your
preschoolers and a spooky costume at the evening party.
A separate party is provided for 6-12 graders at the
Teen Center on Park Street. FMI see page 14
Classroom Garden
Next week, we will be breaking ground with our classroom garden. A greenhouse has been put in behind the science room next door. We have been patiently waiting for the construction to be completed. It was neat to watch the process from beginning to end. We are now able to put a garden outside the three windows in our classroom. Starting next week, we will be beginning to work on the garden. We will be creating a 12 by 4 foot section. If you are interested in helping with this project, you can send in some bulbs or small plants that can be planted this late in the season. We do not claim to have green thumbs, but we are willing to give this a try.
Every Friday, our class will be having a class lunch. We will dine together on home or school lunch. This gives us a weekly opportunity to get to know our classmates and practice our social skills.
Wed. Oct. 29 – Teacher Workshop- Noon dismissal
Thurs. Oct. 30 Whole school Mock Election
Fri. Oct. 31 Immigration Event- Students are asked to dress as immigrants when they come to school that morning. Girls should wear long skirts or dresses with a shawl or wrap. Boys are to wear knickers (pants tucked into high socks), collared shirts and vests or suspenders if possible. They will be taking part in a simulation of what it might have been like to pass through Ellis Island between 1880-1910. Students are asked to bring a basket or sack also. Parents are invited to attend the activities which start at 8:45. Students may also bring in food from the country they are researching. This part is totally optional.
Thurs. Nov. 6, the fourth graders will be traveling by bus for an in-district field trip to the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport/ Wells Water District Water Treatment Plant. This is in conjunction with our current science unit, Watery Earth. There we will tour the drinking water plant. Our class will be in two groups, and the entire visit will last about 45 minutes. We will learn about the Branch Brook Watershed, how the groundwater aquifer works, and the process by which water from the river becomes our town's drinking water. We thank the water district for sharing their time and expertise with us, as we learn first hand where our water comes from. We're looking forward to an informative and interesting trip!
Friday, November 7th 5th grade Native American posters will be on display in the gym. Please feel free to come and take a look. They have been working very hard on their research and posters.
As of today, there will be no more homework passes sold in my classroom. It became too confusing to the students and families. There will be math and spelling homework every Monday to Thursday night. Please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes every night.
Spelling tests are every Friday.
Scholastic News quizzes (5th graders only) are every Friday, too. Be sure to have your child review the Scholastic articles Thursday night for homework.
We just finished reading the book called Three Good Deeds. Our next class book is The Tale of Despereaux.
We finished a class writing assignment about their favorite fall activities. The writing will be on display outside our room. I will send home the writing later next month.
Finally.... if you could send in a box of tissues, the class would appreciate it. We are running low.

In Writing, the class is currently working on an assignment about their three favorite fall activities. Upon completion, a copy of this assignment will be sent home.
In Reading, each student is working on reading materials assigned in their grade level homerooms. 4th graders are reading Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, some 5th graders are reading Hatchet while another class is reading Something Upstairs. We also have a classroom book called Three Good Deeds.
In Science, 5th grade students are learning about Energy and 4th graders are learning about Watery earth.
In Social Studies, 5th graders are beginning research on their Native American Tribes. Their posters will be done here at school. The 5th grade PowWow is on Nov 7th. 4th graders will begin lessons on Immigration. Their Immigration Day is October 31st.
Other classroom activities include….
starting our day with Jump Start (led by our school occupational therapist, Mrs. Camire). Students are working on getting their body and mind ready for the school day. Some of these exercises can be done later in the day if a child finds he/she needs a pick up or a slow down.
Daily Oral Language lessons to practice grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling skills.
And DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Time.
I have sent home an updated schedule for each child. If needed, this may be changed a bit over the school year. You may want to tape it into your child’s planner.
Dates to remember:
Oct 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 are Early Release Days. This will give staff here an opportunity to get trained in SmartBoard use, math and special education services.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the Sea Road School Open House on Monday, September 15th. Remember, this is an adult only event. Fourth grade teachers are available from 6:30 to 7:15 and 5th grade teachers will be available from 7:30 to 8:15. Each teacher will be giving a presentation of what that room/grade level will be covering this school year. I will be in my room from 6:30 to 8:15. Feel free to take a look around the building, in the allied art rooms and drop in to visit the Resource Room.

Sea Road has gone paperless. Much of the school information (lunch calendar, notices) are being sent by email. Please take a minute to email, call or write a note to let me know you are receiving this Blog and school emails. I just want to make sure each family is kept up to date through the school year.

Mrs. CIn social studies the 4th graders will be learning about Ellis Island/Immigration and the 5th graders will be studying Native Americans. On Friday the 31st of October, all 4th graders will be immigrating to the United States. On Friday November 7th, the 5th graders will be displaying their Native American posters. Families are encourgaged to attend. More details will follow.
