Beginning the week of March 11th, all second and third grade students at K.E.S. will have the opportunity to roller skate during their physical education classes. This program was made possible through a grant from the Maine Community Foundation. Through their generosity, we were able to purchase over sixty pair of roller skates, helmets, and sets of wrist guards, elbow and knee pads.
All students are required to wear helmets, knee and elbow pads and wrist guards. These can be brought from home or borrowed from school. If a student is borrowing a helmet it will be required that they wear a baseball cap or bandana underneath. Roller skates can also be brought from home but roller blades are not permitted.
Parent volunteers are needed to make this program a success. Duties will include lacing skates, assisting students with less experience, and spraying down and putting equipment away at the end of class. If parents would like to skate, there are plenty of adult sizes available. Younger siblings (pre-school) are also welcomed to attend. This program will run for approximately four weeks.
A notice about a third grade field trip to Happy Wheels in Portland on April 17th will be send home later in the program.
The snow is here and it is time for snowshoeing. For the next two weeks the students of KES will be snowshoeing during P.E. Please remember to have your child come to school with winter attire for this great activity. Volunteers are welcome.
The Kindergarten classes for the next two weeks will have P.E. and Music only once during the week to accomodate the time needed for snowshoeing.
The P.E. schedule for Kindergarten will be as follows:
Monday: Mrs. Hayes 9:10 - 9:50 a.m., Mrs. Berube 9:50 - 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday: Mrs. Goldberg 9:00 - 9:40 a.m., Mrs. Curran 9:40 - 10:00 a.m.
Thursday: Mrs. Towne 9:00 - 9:40 a.m.

Dear MSAD71 Parents, Staff and Members of the Kennebunk High School Student Body,
On Tuesday afternoon, January 8, high school officials were notified of an alleged threat made toward Kennebunk High School. The police were immediately notified and took action. Through deliberations with them, and due to the fact that the suspect was apprehended and detained, we decided to hold school today. We continue to be in constant communication with our police department to monitor the situation and assure student and staff safety.
We are thankful for the immediate and thoughtful response by our law enforcement agents in assisting us in keeping our school safe. We assure you that the safety of all will remain our top priority.
Below is the press release that our police have provided us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Thomas Farrell
Superintendent of Schools
Kennebunk Police Department
Press Release
January 9th, 2008
On 01-09-08, Jeffrey Stevens Jr., 19 of 2 Old Kennebunk Road in Lyman, ME was arrested and charged with Terrorizing pursuant to a threat made toward the Kennebunk High School. Police state the arrest came after a student from the Kennebunk High School contacted school officials stating the threat was conveyed to that student from Stevens. A Warrant of Arrest was obtained for Stevens early this morning and police from Kennebunk and the York County Sheriffs Department arrested Stevens at his residence without incident. Stevens was taken to the Kennebunk Police Department where he was booked and subsequently transported to the York County Jail. Police are working in conjunction with the school administration to ensure all safety measures are in place. Stevens is scheduled to be arraigned later this afternoon via video arraignment.
Kindergarten students have been learning about safe and healthy ways to move their bodies in the gym. They are beginning to understand moving with an awareness of others and their surroundings. Students are learning many fundamental motor skills such as locomotor (running, hopping, leaping, galloping, sliding, jumping and skipping). throwing and catching, kicking and trapping, dribbling, and striking.
One of our favorite warm-up activities is a musical motor activity to the song "Tony Chestnut". Mrs. Towne's class has agreed to perform this activity at Monday Morning Meeting on December 2, 2007. Parents are welcomed to attend this 8:30 school-wide meeting.
We are fortunate to have two twenty minute P.E. classes and two twenty minute music classes this year. Students are definitely benefiting from the extra time.
