Housekeeping

When writing a pick-up note or bus note please be sure to include the following information:

1.  child's first and last name    2.  teacher's name    3.  date    4.  parent signature

These notes are passed along to the office after I read them and having accurate & detailed information is helpful to everyone involved in making sure your child goes where (s)he needs to go!   THANK YOU!!!!!

SurprisedThe question has come up in the classroom, so I thought I would clarify things for you at home as well.  In second grade, we ask that children do not bring toys to school.  This is for a variety of reasons; first and foremost, we don't want precious items to be lost or broken.  I thank you for your support with this!

Lunch Menu Change

The lunch menu for Wednesday has changed to:

Juice, Breakfast Wrap, Carrot Sticks, Apple and Milk

Science Supplies

 Science Supply Wish List!

Each month we will be sending home a flyer to let you know some of the items that we will need for our science program.  If you have these things available, we would love to have you send them in for the kids to use!

Any of the items sent in will be used by the whole 2nd grade, not just your child’s classroom.  We welcome any donations of items or even gift cards to stores like Wal-Mart, Target, or grocery stores where these items can be purchased.

Here is the list for October:

·        Disposable bowls
·        Brightly colored washable ink (150 ml tube)
·        Ink roller
·        Newspapers
·        paper towels
·        plastic wrap
·        hand soap
·        Zip-top plastic bags – any size
·        Assortment of brain games/brain teasers/brain quest

Thank you in advance for all you do to support the students in their quest for knowledge!

Information

Hello & Happy First Day of Fall!

With the change in seasons, I ask that you please send your child to school with a jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt.  We have recess at 10:00 and often times the sun hasn't had a chance to really warm the air by that time.  Also, the temperature in our classroom has been a bit inconsistent.  If your child has something to put on when (s)he is chilly, it makes for a more comfortable day.

Just a reminder that we will have a visit from the MSAD #71 Maintenance Crew tomorrow morning. These workers will be talking with the children about the important services they provide our school community.  We will be standing outside for a presentation first thing in the morning.  Again, it is important that the children have warm clothes for this activity.

Cool

 A note from the Kitchen:

Due to the 1/2 day on Oct. 1st we will have Soft Pretzels w/string cheese, sunflower seeds, fresh veggies, juice and fresh fruit. Thank you.

Visitor

Dear Parents of Second Graders,

I am pleased to inform you that we are hosting a guest speaker tomorrow, September 18, who will be addressing the second graders at an afternoon assembly.

Thom Harnett, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Education and Enforcement and Director of the Civil Rights Team Project, will talk to the students about kindness, respect for others, what makes a healthy school community, what it feels like to be left out or mistreated, how we sometimes hurt others without even meaning to, and simple things we can do as individuals to make things better.

This assembly supports our continuing efforts to promote positive behavior and sustain a culture of caring.

Sincerely,

Sara

Upcoming Trips

Hello Again!

Please mark your calendars for Thursday, October 2nd, as our second graders will be going on a tour of some businesses in downtown Kennebunk.  This trip aligns with our studies of communities and community workers. During the tour, we will visit the Water Company, Wallingford Farm, Dairy Queen (and hopefully the bank) to learn about community workers, goods and services.  Please be sure to have your child wear comfortable walking shoes on that day!  More information will be provided next week.

Also, on Tuesday, October 7th, we will have an Emergency Services Trip, during which we will visit the police station and fire station.  At the fire station, we will have presentations by the firefighters and EMT's.  We will learn about ambulances and even sit inside one!  Again, please have your child wear comfortable shoes on this day.  More info. to come.

Terrific Two Weeks

We have had a terrific first two weeks of school!!Laughing  The second graders have been working hard to get to know one another, develop new friendships, build our classroom community, become familiar with expectations, and establish classroom guidelines.

The following is our Classroom Constitution.  These 'rules' were established together, with everyone in the class having the opportunity to contribute.  All members of our class signed this constitution as a promise to try and follow these guidelines throughout the school year.

We, the members of Miss Milburn's Class, in order to have a great learning place, promise to:

*Listen politely while others are talking

*Be safe with our hands and feet

*Put things away carefully     and

*Learn a lot and have fun!

We know, by trying our best to follow these guidelines, that everyone will feel safe and be able to learn while having fun!!!

Our trip to the Nursing home was a great success!  I am so proud of the children for their kindness and bravery.  The children made cards for the residents and read/shared a book with one or more people.  We also sang songs to the residents, which was enjoyed by everyone.  Our visit ended with the residents singing "You Are My Sunshine" to us.  It was evident through big smiles that we really brightened the day for many people.  Thank you to Mrs. Roy for making this trip possible and for the wonderful goodie bags.

Thank you for helping your child remember to return his/her bookbag on Friday.  The readers were able to share their books and reflections sheets during small book talks.  Some great literature was shared and everyone had a lot of fun!  We love to read, read, read!
