The Board of School Directors

The Board of School Directors invites all Kennebunk and Kennebunkport taxpayers  to participate in a confidential summit on Wednesday, April 9.  Members of the Board will be available for conversation and questions from 7 to 9 PM at Kennebunk High School.  Please plan to meet in Room 5, enter through the Superintendent's office door, at 7 PM  for a brief overview of the process.

The purpose of these summits is to provide another means of communication between the Board and the various interest groups in the District.  In the past, the Board has held three Teacher Summits, one each at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels; a support staff summit; parents summit; graduated student summit; and high school student summit.  The findings were reported to the full Board and also to the Superintendent so that he could follow up on items that warranted further study.

This year the Board will be meeting with taxpayers on April 9, and with the graduated students in mid-June, in their continuing effort to hear from all stakeholders in the District.

The format will be three short questions from the Board about the District, followed by an open session for any questions or discussion you might wish to
pursue.  All information will be kept confidential, with no names or identifying facts provided.  The Board will prepare two reports, one for the public and another for the Superintendent, both maintaining confidentiality.  The reports will be presented a future Board meeting.

Please feel free to contact any Board member or the Superintendent's Administrative Assistant (985-1100 or dgillette@msad71.net) if you have questions about the meeting or the process.  Thank you in advance for your participation!

Presidents Parade

We are going to be having a Parade of Presidents on February 12 (Lincoln’s birthday) at 8:45, we welcome you to join us in the gymnasium for our Parade of Presidents. We are asking students to dress as their president, or to look somewhat “presidential,” and we will parade through the building ending with the other people who have studies the same president. Girls are welcome to come as the president or the first lady. Feel free to be as creative as you would like, including making presidential campaign buttons or a name tag if you feel that will help identify the president. Some presidents have a very distinctive look, but lots of others might not. Please do not spend any money assembling the costume! We should be wrapping things up by 9:30.

A message from Tom Farrell

January 9, 2007

Dear MSAD71 Parents, Staff and Members of the Kennebunk High School Student Body,

On Tuesday afternoon, January 8, high school officials were notified of an alleged threat made toward Kennebunk High School. The police were immediately notified and took action. Through deliberations with them, and due to the fact that the suspect was apprehended and detained, we decided to hold school today. We continue to be in constant communication with our police department to monitor the situation and assure student and staff safety.

We are thankful for the immediate and thoughtful response by our law enforcement agents in assisting us in keeping our school safe. We assure you that the safety of all will remain our top priority.

Below is the press release that our police have provided us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Farrell

Ellis Island Event

 Parents,

This is an update on our Ellis Island event.

On Wednesday, October 31st at 8:45 students will be participating in an immigration activity that will simulate a visit to Ellis Island of long ago.  Each student has been researching a country as part of this project.  If students would like to bring in food from their country they may. It is not required. Please send in small bite-size pieces.  We have no way of heating things up, so please plan accordingly.  Students are also expected to dress as an immigrant.  We do have some clothing at school they may borrow.  Each child should have a basket or sack of personal belongings that they bring with them from the old country.  These items had to be very limited because of space. Consequently, the items that were brought were very meaningful or essential to them. All parents are invited to the Parade of Immigrants at 8:45 on the 31st of October.Hope to see you then.

Mrs. Walsh
