Field Trip

I am sending home a permission slip today for our first field trip this year.  We will be going to Old York Historical Society.  The students will be cooking a colonial meal that they will be sharing for lunch, weaving, and playing colonial games.  Another packet of information is coming home about what to wear.  They need to dress up as a colonist so this packet will help you pick out appropriate clothes and "makeover" some of the clothes you already have at home.

Also, I wanted to remind you to bring in baby items for our raffle basket.  Thank you to all the parents who have donated baby clothes.  We could now use some bottles, rattles, pacifiers, etc.  Thanks so much for helping our school raise money through this event.

Next week we will have Scholastic News again.  Please make sure your child is reading his/her book project book each night.  The book jacket project is due December 1.  There will be no project for December.

Have a great weekend!

Pow Wow

What a great job the students did on their Native American posters.  They went down to the gym today and displayed their posters, katchina dolls they made in art class, and totem poles we made in class.  The gym was very impressive with all the 5th grade classes' work displayed.  Thank you to all parents who were able to make it in.  I realize it was not at a convenient time for everyone.

We are still looking for volunteers to man the raffle ticket area and wrapping paper station for the Holiday Fair, December 4.  Either email me or send in a note if you have a couple of hours to spare that day. Also, we are doing a baby basket for the raffle table.  If you could donate a baby item we would greatly appreciate it.

I was away on a NEASC accreditation visit Monday-Wednesday and the students were excellent!!!!  Dr. Crowley said they deserved 15 extra minutes of recess so we went out today.   It is always nice to know you have a class whom you don't have to worry about while you are away!

There will be no Scholastic News next week. Cry We will have 13 new Word Master words to study, math, they should be reading their book project book every night, and they will have some cursive to do.

Remember Tuesday is Veteran's Day, no school, and Wednesday is a 1/2 day.

Have a great weekend!

Holiday Fair Coming Soon

The Holiday Fair will be here before we know it.  It is December 4, and we are looking for parent volunteers to run the raffle table and the gift wrapping table.  If you are able to help out for 1, 2 or more hours, please fill out the blue paper that was sent home and get it back to me.

Also, we will be putting together a baby basket for the raffle table.  Any baby item that you would like to donate would be great.

Have a spooktacular day and restful weekend!

Out next week

November 3-5 I will be at an accreditation visit in New Hampshire.  I will not be in school.  Mrs. Sherman will be subbing.  She was the teacher who use to loop here at Sea Road.  I took her place when she retired.  She is wonderful and I feel very comfortable with her here for those 3 days.  I will have my computer with me and can check emails in case you have any questions.

Here are some reminders.

  • Book projects are due tomorrow.
  • Native American posters are due Wednesday, November 5.
  • The Pow-Wow is Friday, November 7 from 9:30-2:00.  We will be down there from 10-10:30, but you can come anytime to see the projects.  We are not preforming, just looking at everyone's projects.
  • New book project forms will go home for November.  They will be making a book jacket and the book is a free choice.  They do need to check it with me first though.
  • We are looking for volunteers for the Holiday Fair here at Sea Road December 4.

We have started learning about explorers in social studies.  We have finished our first science unit on energy.  In math we are working on division.  Word master words are back and you should have seen your child studying for those words this week.  There will be a quiz tomorrow on those words.

Have a great weekend!

A Couple of Things

I sent home a paper last week to sign up for parent/teacher conference times.  If you haven't seen it yet, look in your child's bag.  I would like to get those back as soon as possible so that I can let people know their day and time.

As you all probably already know, there is no Scholastic News this week.  You are probably even happier about that than the kids!!!!  With no SN it should give the students more time this week to work on their biography book project (Due October 31) and their Native American poster.  The last 2 paragraphs are due this Friday for the poster.  The whole Native American poster is due November 5th.  We will have a Pow-Wow in the gym on the 7th where their posters and artwork will be displayed. We will be going down to look at all the projects from 10-10:30 that day if you want to come when we are down there.  If you can't make that time, you could come by anytime from 9:30-2:00.

Have a great week!

October 10, 2008

Happy Friday!  We have been busy this week working on getting final drafts done on the first 3 paragraphs for the students Native American posters.  They should have Homes, Food, and Clothing done.  I edited what they handed in today so they may have some quick changes to make this weekend.  Some students have not handed in anything yet.  Please check with your child about this or email me if you are not sure.  Next week they are responsible for getting Weapons & Tools, Land & Geography, and Arts & Crafts done.  I sent home a calendar that has all the due dates on it.  To save time during the week they could work on those paragraphs over the weekend.  We will have Scholastic News next week (Getting sent home today).

Word masters starts next week if you remember that from last year.  It is our vocabulary program.  We will be looking up the words next week and then it will become part of their word homework to study the following week.

Right now we could use some spoons, forks and sponges in the classroom.

We will be doing the second part of the NWEA testing this week which is the math section.  This will be Tuesday morning after our long weekend.

Finally, I will be sending home conference notices sometime next week for you to pick a good time to come in and meet with me.  They will be sometime in the end of October-early November.  I will have some night times available.

Enjoy the beautiful, long weekend!

Happy Friday!

This week the students have worked really hard on gathering information about their Native American tribes.  I am giving them back their packets today with a note attached telling them what they still need to find.  I would like them to research this over the weekend as we will be starting to write out the paragraphs next week.  I showed them some examples of posters today so they know what I expect.  Any help you could give them this weekend would be great.

Fund raisers are due Monday.

We will be taking the NWEA reading test on the computer on Tuesday.  This will help to see progress they have made since springtime and will be a benchmark for growth this year.  The math NWEA will be the following Tuesday.  Both are taken at 8:30 so make sure your child is here on time so they won't have to make it up.

This coming Wednesday is another 1/2 day.

There will be NO Scholastic News next week, so the students should have lots of extra time to work on their Native American paragraphs for their posters.Laughing

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sun, finally!

A Few Things

On Monday we went to a presentation by the Child Abuse and Neglect Counsel.  A paper went home about what they talked about.

We have been having a lot of fun in our Energy Unit in science.  We made energy boats yesterday.  We are going to share them today and talk about what worked and didn't work.

In social studies the students each picked a Native American tribe that they will be researching.  They will be doing most of the research here at school, but completing the poster at home.  It will be due November 5.  More about that to come home soon.

Volunteering will start next week.  If you wanted to volunteer and haven't gotten the sheet into me yet, please do so this week.

Just a reminder that every Wednesday in October is a 1/2 day.

The ice cream social is at KES Thursday from 4:30-6:00.  I will be there serving ice cream!!!

The students should be done reading their September book project book.  The project is due September 30th.  They should have all the information about the project already.

Have a great rest of the week!

September 15, 2008

We had a good week last week.  We are continuing to read Hatchet.  The students are enjoying it.  We are getting to the end of our first unit in math.  We will be done by the end of this week.  Ask the students about square numbers and square roots.  They have just been introduced to those concepts!!  In science we continue to learn about energy.  We will be "playing" with different toys this week to learn about how energy works.  In social studies we will be taking a deeper look at the Woodland Indians of the Northeast region.

Remember tonight at 7:30 is parent orientation.  If you can't come I will send the packet home tomorrow that I will be going over.  One thing I want to make sure you know if you can't come is that I want everyone to be signed up for this blog.  So if you have another address that you want to add, let me know.  If your computer is ever down, let me know and I will send hard copies home to you.  This year all notices are being sent home via email so it is really important you let us know if you are not getting them on Thursdays or if you need hard copies.

I hope to see everyone tonight!!
