Last 2 Days of MEAs!!!

Today and tomorrow are the last 2 days of the MEA testing.  We did 3 reading sessions and 3 math sessions last week.  We just have 3 sessions of science left.  The students have been working super hard on the tests. I have been very proud of them.  There will be a surprise ice cream sundae party for them on Thursday.  Shhh!!!  If your child has missed a day they will be making up the missed parts Thursday and/or Friday.  Thanks to everyone who sent in snacks.  The kids loved them!!!!

Remember tomorrow is a 1/2 day and the PTA sponsored spaghetti supper will be from 5-7.  It is a great fundraiser for them and a great time to get your family together for a fun school event.  They love to see all their friends there at night!  I will be having conferences that night (as I had no idea at the time that the supper was scheduled then).  I am looking forward to seeing all of you and talking about your wonderful children.  We have such a nice class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another reminder, Thursday is "YELLOW" day.  The cafeteria will have yellow fruits and vegetables and the students can dress in yellow.  It is a good, fun way to have a nice conversation about nutrition.

Next Friday report cards go out so expect to see them in their backpacks.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing our volunteers back in the classroom starting Thursday.

Lots of News

We have a busy couple of weeks coming up.  Tomorrow report cards will go home so be looking for those in your child's backpack.  The envelope gets signed and brought back, but you keep everything else.  If you have any questions about the report cards just give me a call or email me.

Next week I will be going to the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) Conference in Boston.  I will be out for 2 days, March 27th and March 28th.  I hope to come back with lots of cool science ideas!  Since I won't be in to remind the kids, please make sure that they come dressed as the character from their book and have their report ready to share on Monday, March 31.  I will also not be here to remind them that it is Beach Day on Friday, March 28th.  They can come to school with towels to read on and eat lunch on.  It is a fun day.  Also, that night the PTA puts on bingo night at KES.  It is a fun family event and each kid gets to go home with a free book!

Next week is also the end of the colors month that the school nutrition committee has been putting on.  Tuesday is green/white day and Thursday is orange day.

My final reminder it that the band and chorus concert is on April 2 at 7:00.  The kids should be here around 6:30-6:45.  All the students participate in this event.  You will be amazed when you here the beginner band!

In reading right now we are reading 3 different books and meeting in literature circles to discuss what we had just read.  After we are done with that we will be learning about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and reading many of his poems.  We will write poems of our own and we will have a big Longfellow Tea on May 9th at 9:00.  You will be invited to come hear our poetry and enjoy some nice refreshments with us.  Our final field trip will be to the Longfellow house in Portland on May 6th.

In math we are in the middle of Unit 9 which is about percents.  They are discovering the relationships between fractions, percents and decimals.

In Social Studies we are learning about the southeast region of the United States.  The students did really well on their Northeast state and capitol test.  We will have a quiz on the southeast states next week.

The students are working on descriptive pieces right now in writing. They had to design a special chair and describe it.  You should see the fancy gadgets and powers they have!!!

I think that is it for now.  Have a great weekend! Laughing

Isn't it Tuesday?

Well, it feels like Tuesday to me.  As you probably know, I was out sick Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  I thought I had made it through flu season, but I got hit hard.  So, I never went to the science conference on Thursday and Friday.  I'm glad I didn't miss Beach Day though.  It is so much fun!  We started the day giving the kids leis as they got off the bus.  They saw palm trees throughout the halls.  When they got in the classroom there were more palm trees, a bright sun, a beach chair, and sand pail.  There was Beach Boy music playing in the hall.  Around 8:45 there was a "warning" on the intercom and the whole school joined in on a conga line throughout the building (and even out into the snow!).  After we read our chapters in reading, we had beach balls with questions on them.  When the ball was passed to them they had to answer the question that they saw when they caught it. Some questions were, Who were the main characters?  What happened in the middle?  What was the setting?    At snack we had special beach cupcakes I made them.  During lunch they had a picnic on the floor with their towels and Dr. Crowley led them in the twist and the limbo!  In the afternoon we made beach pictures out of scrapbook materials.  They came up with some great creations!  We did do a little work, but fun was had by all!  Cool

Just one reminder, the band/chorus concert for ALL 4th graders is Wednesday, April 2.  They need to be here by about 6:30.  They come to their classroom and we get them ready and lined up.

The students should have their book projects done and handed in on Monday.  They need to come dressed as their character from their book.

Have a great, snowy day!

Announcement from the Board of School Directors

The Board of School Directors invites all Kennebunk and Kennebunkport taxpayers  to participate in a confidential summit on Wednesday, April 9.  Members of the Board will be available for conversation and questions from 7 to 9 PM at Kennebunk High School.  Please plan to meet in Room 5, enter through the Superintendent's office door, at 7 PM  for a brief overview of the process.

The purpose of these summits is to provide another means of communication between the Board and the various interest groups in the District.  In the past, the Board has held three Teacher Summits, one each at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels; a support staff summit; parents summit; graduated student summit; and high school student summit.  The findings were reported to the full Board and also to the Superintendent so that he could follow up on items that warranted further study.

This year the Board will be meeting with taxpayers on April 9, and with the graduated students in mid-June, in their continuing effort to hear from all stakeholders in the District.

The format will be three short questions from the Board about the District, followed by an open session for any questions or discussion you might wish to
pursue.  All information will be kept confidential, with no names or identifying facts provided.  The Board will prepare two reports, one for the public and another for the Superintendent, both maintaining confidentiality.  The reports will be presented a future Board meeting.

Please feel free to contact any Board member or the Superintendent's Administrative Assistant (985-1100 or dgillette@msad71.net) if you have questions about the meeting or the process.  Thank you in advance for your participation!
