Teachers are teachers forever

my%20teacher.jpg

Hello Students and Parents,

I wanted to share this very special photo with you because it represents how I feel about the wonderful relationship between a teacher and her students. Here I am at my wedding this summer with my second and third grade teacher! She traveled all the way to Maine from Indiana to see me get married and it meant the world to me.  I still call her Mrs. S and she is the reason I wanted to become a teacher!  Thank you, Mrs. S!

Back to School Letter

Dear Parents,

Last week, letters were sent out to you with information on the beginning of our school year together!  Please email me if you did not receive yours. The letter contains information about our Parent Orientation, a list of items that would be helpful for your second grader to bring to school on the first day, and a name tag to be worn on the first day of school.  Please remember to write your child's name and the number of the bus they should take at dismissal (or write
"Pick-Up" if you will be picking your child up at the end of the day).

I hope to see you at Parent Orientation on Wednesday, August 27th at 6:00 pm in our classroom, E109. It is located in the North Wing and is the last classroom on the right side of the hallway. Mrs. Zito will have the Opening Day Packets ready for you to take home that night so you can fill out the information and send the forms back with your student on the first dayLaughing!  If you are not able to attend our orientation, feel free to email me and I can set aside a packet for you that night, as well any information I hand out. My email address is kbwashburn@msad71.net.  See you soon!

                                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                                             Katie Washburn

A Great Night!

It was wonderful to see everyone that made it to our Parent Orientation last night! I saw some familiar faces and some new ones too! What a great way to kick off the year! I really enjoyed talking with all of you and I am even more excited now to see your children on Tuesday and start a fantastic year together!
I am sorry not everyone could make it but I completely understand how busy this last week of August is for many families!  I set aside all the information that was handed out and will send it home with your child on the first day of school. Please take a moment to read through my orientation packet and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me! Also, please remember to fill out the Student Information sheets and return those to school as soon as you can.
I know many of you are wonderful volunteers and are eager to get involved! If you weren't able to make it to the orientation, I have listed the volunteering opportunities below. Look them over an send me an email with your preferences. I will get back to you in a few weeks with a schedule.

Volunteer Opportunities

__ Library Helpers Monday afternoons 1:00-1:30

__ Math Games Friday afternoons

__ School Store one Friday afternoon each Month

__ Literacy Centers
Mon, Tues, Wed, or Thurs mornings

__ Home Helper– help prepare materials at home

__ Party Planner-organize one of our two class parties

__ Room Parent– call families in our class with important info, if needed

Lastly, there were some changes in our schedule that are not reflected in the packet and I wanted to be sure everyone was aware of them. Children may now walk down to their classrooms at 7:50am and our school day begins at 8:15.  Dismissal now begins at 2:49pm.  Also, the first Early Release Wednesday will be September 10th and then every Wednesday during the month of October will be an Early Release day. In November we will return to the regularly scheduled Early Release days, which are the second Wednesday of the month.

Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Snack

Our regular snacktime will be at 12:40 each day. During this time, the children will be able to order milk and juice from the kitchen, eat their snack, and we will have our "Sharing" time.

I realize that the children may not be accustomed to having snack in the afternoon. So to help with the transition, we will start off the year by having a, "working snack" in the morning, in addition to the afternoon. Please pack your child a snack for the morning that can be eaten while they are working. It should be a snack that if it were to spill, none of the papers or books that the student is working on would be ruined. Some suggestions are a baggie of granola, nuts, raisins, crackers, etc (basically, anything that does not have a lot of moisture or require utensils).

Thanks so much for your help with this!

Art Shirt

Our art teacher, Kathy Marquis, would like to remind parents to send in an over-sized t-shirt with your child before their first art class, if possible. Our first art class is Wednesday, September 3rd. Please write your child's first name in large letters on the front of the shirt and their last name on the back. The children will use their shirts as smocks so be sure it is not something you want back in its original condition at the end of the year!Wink
