Week One

We had such a great first week here in Room D122!  I have really enjoyed getting to know your children better and watching how excited they all seem to be about being back at school!

We have done some peer interviews and found out more about each other.  Our classroom library is now open and the kids are reading like crazy!  We started Everyday Math, though there still aren’t any Home Link homework sheets quite yet!

The students have started writing in their daily journals this week, which is something that they will do almost every day throughout second grade.  Most days I give them a topic, but they can write about anything at all on Free Choice Fridays!

Today we also talked about our classroom rules.  They had such great ideas about what kinds of rules we should have in our room!

We also created a schedule for sharing.  Each child will have an opportunity to share news with the class each week.  Your child will have his or her sharing time on the same day each week.  The schedule is:

Monday:           Taylor N. and all Owens!

Tuesday:          Sally, Megan, Ali, Conor

Wednesday:    Andrew, Amber, Sami, Jason

Thursday:         Grace, Morgan, Nicholas, Taylor D.

Friday:              Charlotte, Brede, MacKenzie, Caitlin

On Monday, the kids will be creating “Me Bags”.  They will need to bring with them 6-7 small items that help tell about who they are.  The items need to be small and light enough to all fit inside of a brown paper lunch bag.   They might include pictures, small souvenirs or keepsakes, drawings, writing, or other small things.   When the bags have been finished to look like each student, they will share all their items with their classmates so we can continue to get to know more about the members of our class.   Then we will display them outside our classroom for other students to see!

Monday will be our first Art class, so if you haven’t already sent in an oversized shirt for them, please send it in on Monday.

Finally, if you still have the information packet paperwork, please send it with your child as soon as possible!

It’s been a great week!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,

I am finding that with our new schedule, that the kids are often hungry throughout the day.  Right now, we have been having our snack in the morning, however, when we start doing reading groups, it’s not going to be possible fit in snack and the reading centers before recess.  Some of the other teachers have been trying different things, and I thought that this might work.

In the mornings, during our reading time, we will have a “working snack”. The items that can be packed for this time would be dry and easy to eat.  Examples might be pretzels, crackers, dry cereal, pop-tarts, or granola.  Basically, something that they can snack on that won’t spill and won’t require hand washing afterwards! Smile

In the afternoons between math and our allied arts class, we will have our regular snack.  This is the time that they can have things that are “wet”, i.e. applesauce, fruit, etc..

Thank you so much for your support and I will let you know if this plan is working!

Early Release Wednesday!

Tomorrow is our first Early Release Wednesday.

In order to keep everything going smoothly, please be sure that your child knows what they are doing after school if it is different than a normal day.  Remember, you can always email me if it is easier than sending in a note with your child.

Dismissal will begin at noon.

Thanks! Smile

The Golden Sneaker!

The Golden Sneaker Award is given at the end of each school year to the class who has the most stars on the chart in Mrs. Dyer’s class.  We can get stars in two ways:

1)   By having everyone in the class ready to go with sneakers on PE day

2)    By donating old but still useable sneakers to the sneaker box for students to use if they don’t bring sneakers on PE day.

It has only been won by a 2nd grade class one time and that was in 2005!  Let’s take back the sneaker and remember:

Tuesday is Sneaker Day!!Cool

A note from our principal

Dear Parents of Second Graders,

I am pleased to inform you that we are hosting a guest speaker tomorrow, September 18, who will be addressing the second graders at an afternoon assembly.

Thom Harnett, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Education and Enforcement and Director of the Civil Rights Team Project, will talk to the students about kindness, respect for others, what makes a healthy school community, what it feels like to be left out or mistreated, how we sometimes hurt others without even meaning to, and simple things we can do as individuals to make things better.

This assembly supports our continuing efforts to promote positive behavior and sustain a culture of caring.

Sincerely,

Sara

 Science Supply Wish List!

Each month we will be sending home a flyer to let you know some of the items that we will need for our science program.  If you have these things available, we would love to have you send them in for the kids to use!

Any of the items sent in will be used by the whole 2nd grade, not just your child’s classroom.  We welcome any donations of items or even gift cards to stores like Wal-Mart, Target, or grocery stores where these items can be purchased.

Here is the list for October:

·        Brightly colored washable ink (150 ml tube)

·        Ink roller

·        Newspapers

·        paper towels

·        plastic wrap

·        hand soap

·        Zip-top plastic bags – any size

·        Assortment of brain games/brain teasers/brain quest

Thank you in advance for all you do to support the students in their quest for knowledge!

Correction to flyer coming home!!

"Meadow Farms fund raising orders are due October 6th, not October 2nd.  Sorry for any inconvenience and Thank You for participating."

September

It is hard to believe that September is almost over already!  We have been busy in our classroom over the past couple of weeks.

We have had 2 "Stars of the Week" so far and I think that they have enjoyed themselves!  Thanks to Taylor N. and Owen W. for kicking off the Star Student weeks in style!   We don't have a Star of the Week during this last week of September, but next up is Samantha starting on October 6th!

We have been reading Frog and Toad Are Friends as a class and talking about character differences and friendship.  In the coming weeks we will begin doing rotating centers during our literacy time and then we will also begin Guided Reading groups.

We made class address/phone books that should have gone home today, but as I looked in the cubbies, I did see a couple that were left behind!  You can expect them on Monday! Tongue out

We finished our first unit in the Everyday Math program and took the first assessment.  Home Link homework pages will now be coming home Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights.  Once the Early Release Wednesdays of October are through, the Home Links will come home on Wednesdays as well.

We have been learning about life cycles in science and we have learned about the differences in the life cycles of different organisms such as frogs, house flies, and humans!  We will be choosing a "Class Tree" next week to examine and watch the changes it goes through over the seasons.

In social studies, we have begun to talk about our community and the different things that every community has to provide.  We talked about the differences between providing a service and providing a good or product.  We had a visit from the Maintenance Department for MSAD 71 and they told us all about the service that they provide to our school community.  They had lots of tools to show us from mowers and tractors to painters and trimmers!

Next week will be our first Field Trip – the Walking Tour of Kennebunk.  We had a change of plans and instead of being able to visit the Kennebunk Savings Bank, we will instead be going to the Kennebunk Free Library.  I will email those of you who volunteered to chaperone and let you know the full itinerary.  Thank you so much for your help!

We are still currently in the lead for the Golden Sneaker award!  Keep sending in those old but useable sneakers to keep our numbers up!  Mrs. Poulin's class is planning a takeover! Surprised

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Ice Cream Social!  I hope you all got your hot fudge before we ran out!

Happy weekend - Stay dry!

Field Trips

Thank you all for volunteering to chaperone our first field trips!

Our chaperones for the Walking Tour will be Jennifer Pinette, Mary Weisheit, Alison Stewart, Karin Gibson and Stacey Ames.

Our chaperones for the trip to the Kennebunk Public Safety departments will be Leah Rachin, Deb or Mark Welch-Thompson, Tammi Bittler, and Laura or Brian Desmarais.

We have had a slight change in the Walking Tour schedule.  The Kennebunk Savings Bank was unable to host our group this year, so we will be visiting the Kennebunk Free Library instead.

Here is the schedule for October 2nd:

9:00             Bus #1 will pick up Milburn, Hanson & Roubo
Drop Milburn at Water Company then Hanson & Roubo at DQ

9:15–9:45     Hanson & Roubo @ DQ

9:55–10:25   Hanson & Roubo @ Wallingford Farm

10:35–11:05  Hanson & Roubo @ Water Co.

11:15–11:45  Hanson & Roubo @ Library

11:45             Bus #1 will pick up Hanson, Roubo & Washburn in the Library parking lot

You are welcome to meet us at Dairy Queen or ride the bus with us.  Either option is fine - we should have enough room on the buses.  Just remember that if you do meet us at DQ, you will have to walk back to your car from the Library as that is where our walking tour is ending.

We will be doing the Public Safety trip a bit differently than other field trips as we have 4 places to visit and 3 classes attending.  Our class will be split up into 4 groups of 5 children.  Each chaperone will have that small group of 5 and will travel with the other groups of 5 from Mrs. Washburn's class and Mrs. Roper's class.  This means that for each group of 15 children, we should have 3 parent chaperones plus a teacher.

Here is the schedule for the Public Safety trip on October 7th:

1135 – Bus to downtown from KES

1145 - Arrival

               Group 1 – Police

               Group 2 – Fire

               Group 3 – Ambulance

               Group 2 – Police

               Group 3 – Fire

Group 2 – Rescue back boarding demonstration

              Group 3 – Police

              Group 4 – Fire

1245 –   Group 1 – Fire

               Group 2 – Ambulance

Group 3 – Rescue back boarding demonstration

               Group 4 – Police

105 –     Return to KES

I have not yet assigned the groups to the adults, but I will let you know before the 7th.  You are welcome to meet us at the Fire Department or ride the bus with us.  Either option is fine - we should have enough room on the buses.

Again, thank you all so much for coming along with us as we explore our Kennebunk community!
