11-21-08

It has been a while since my last Blog and I am so very sorry… but I have barely had a moment to sit and type. Your little learners have been keeping me very busy.

In math students have been working with estimating, reading and showing temperatures, and working with number stories.

Science has us working with the ideas behind motion (path, speed, distance, push/pulls, and collisions). The students have set up experiments and tested their hypothesis. Bill Nye the Science Guy (a video) gave us a lot of information and was very funny to watch!

The study of the earth, mapping skills, and continents are a current focus in social studies… soon enough you will see large blue globes headed your way!

I am looking forward to meeting with you when you come in for your child’s conference. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please give me a call or e-mail me – I am sure there is something we can work out.

Have a great weekend!

On Thursday 10/23  our science lesson will be a discussion about how our brains work and testing our sensory observation skills.  In order to do this, we will need an assortment of foods that will challenge the senses!   We are looking for:

Fresh herbs  (parsley, cilantro, mint, dill, anise, basil, etc.)

Other cooking ingredients  (garlic, horseradish, ginger, cloves etc.)

Unfamiliar fruits  (mango, pomegranate, star fruit, etc.)

Thank you in advance for anything you can send in with your child!

Volunteers and D123

Volunteers have started make their way into D123 and we are all the better for it! Whether it was reading groups, math groups, or the craziness of lesson 7 in science the volunteers came through and everything went very well.

Speaking of volunteers, Kelly (Sage’s Mom), Alyson (Nate’s Mom), and Cheryl (Christine’s Mom) accompanied us on our field trip to the Police and Fire Station. Sage’s Mom really impressed the students as she fired the water hose and almost blew a chair and bucket into on coming traffic! J

Next week we do not have school on Monday and Wednesday is a half day.

Logan will be Student of the Week starting Tuesday.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the nice weather with your family.

Warmly, Sean

Tomorrow we head out and explore the town of Kennebunk. We will cover a lot of ground so please make sure your son/daughter is wearing appropriate foot wear. As long as it is not raining we will make the trek to Main Street. You just never know what the temperature is going to be so, layers of clothing is very important.

Here is the schedule for October 2nd:

9:00             Bus #1 will pick up Milburn, Hanson & Roubo
Drop Milburn at Water Company then Hanson & Roubo at DQ

9:15–9:45     Hanson & Roubo @ DQ

9:55–10:25   Hanson & Roubo @ Wallingford Farm

10:35–11:05  Hanson & Roubo @ Water Co.

11:15–11:45  Hanson & Roubo @ Library

11:45             Bus #1 will pick up Hanson, Roubo & Washburn in the Library parking lot

You are welcome to meet us at Dairy Queen or ride the bus with us.  Either option is fine - we should have enough room on the buses.  Just remember that if you do meet us at DQ, you will have to walk back to your car from the Library as that is where our walking tour is ending.

What a busy week

Oh what a busy week we have had… Frog and Toad have been keeping us busy as we read through the many adventures they have had. We continue to learn about digraphs, blends and focus on the difference between “open and closed” syllables. Math, we just love math! Grouping by 10’s, using a calculator, telling time, and adding coins have all been a topic of discussion. Our first math homework went out this week and 100 percent came back – perfect! We have also been looking at the lifecycle of humans, flies, frogs, and sheep – wow, that a busy week!

We continue to work on our classroom rules:

  1. Respect the classroom
  2. Respect others
  3. Respect yourself

Have a great weekend!

Guest Speaker - Thom Harnett

Dear Parents of Second Graders,

I am pleased to inform you that we are hosting a guest speaker tomorrow, September 18, who will be addressing the second graders at an afternoon assembly.

Thom Harnett, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Education and Enforcement and Director of the Civil Rights Team Project, will talk to the students about kindness, respect for others, what makes a healthy school community, what it feels like to be left out or mistreated, how we sometimes hurt others without even meaning to, and simple things we can do as individuals to make things better.

This assembly supports our continuing efforts to promote positive behavior and sustain a culture of caring.

Sincerely,

Sara
