In math students have been working with estimating, reading and showing temperatures, and working with number stories.
Science has us working with the ideas behind motion (path, speed, distance, push/pulls, and collisions). The students have set up experiments and tested their hypothesis. Bill Nye the Science Guy (a video) gave us a lot of information and was very funny to watch!
The study of the earth, mapping skills, and continents are a current focus in social studies… soon enough you will see large blue globes headed your way!

Speaking of volunteers, Kelly (Sage’s Mom), Alyson (Nate’s Mom), and Cheryl (Christine’s Mom) accompanied us on our field trip to the Police and Fire Station. Sage’s Mom really impressed the students as she fired the water hose and almost blew a chair and bucket into on coming traffic! J
Next week we do not have school on Monday and Wednesday is a half day.
Logan will be Student of the Week starting Tuesday.

I am pleased to inform you that we are hosting a guest speaker tomorrow, September 18, who will be addressing the second graders at an afternoon assembly.
Thom Harnett, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Education and Enforcement and Director of the Civil Rights Team Project, will talk to the students about kindness, respect for others, what makes a healthy school community, what it feels like to be left out or mistreated, how we sometimes hurt others without even meaning to, and simple things we can do as individuals to make things better.
This assembly supports our continuing efforts to promote positive behavior and sustain a culture of caring.

]]>These are all questions we tried to answer as we create our classroom address book. As soon as it is printed I will get it out to you. It is prefect for creating play dates with new and old friends. This is a skill we will continue to work on as many found it to be a challenge.
We continue to learn names and interests of classmates… we keep finding that many of us like similar things and lead very similar lifestyles (many have pets, many like pizza, many love the color blue, etc).
We love spelling and it was easy to tell as this week we learned about digraphs.
Math was fun this week as we really spent a lot of energy working on telling time. The short hand, the long hand, and all those little minute lines J We will continue to work on this skill.
I had a great week and I hope your child did as well.

]]>1. “Me Bags” – take a few days and collect little things that tell about who your child is and where they have been. Then send in the bag full of 6-7 items. We will share them in class and then display them in the room.
2. Classroom rules – take a few minutes and sit down with your child. Aid them in developing quality rules they should have in the classroom. Send those back to school and we will use their ideas to form our classroom rules.

Dear Parents / Guardians:
My name is Sean Hanson and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Because I will be spending such a large portion of the day with your child, I would love to take this opportunity to share a few things about myself, both personally and professionally.
I grew up in Maine and I am so pleased to be teaching in Kennebunk for this, my seventh year. Before landing in Kennebunk I attended the University of Maine at Farmington, where I received my BS degree. I later went on to obtain a MS degree from the University of New England. I am married and have one daughter. My wife, Michelle, is an educator at a hospital in New Hampshire. My daughter, Delaney, is almost two years old and is…well… a sweetheart!
I am committed to fulfilling my mission which is to foster a love of learning in my students. To show my students that education has a direct link to opportunity. I will dedicate myself to helping your child reach his or her potential this year. Together we should anticipate a successful and rewarding year for your child!
I hope to ease your child’s transition into second grade and allow it to happen as smoothly as possible. This is going to be a wonderful year! Enjoy the rest of the summer and I hope to meet up with you soon. Parent Orientation night is on Wednesday August 27th from 6:00 – 6:30 at KES in my classroom (D123).
On the first day of school please have your son/daughter wear their “Team Hanson” name tag. I will meet them in the gym the morning of September 2nd and wearing the tag helps in identifying them!
