*** We will be doing all the research in school. Number 3 is the only part of the project to be done at home. ***

You have just arrived after a long journey from England. Your dream of starting your own business, in one of the new colonies, is about to come true.

1.    You need to choose a colonial occupation ( such as blacksmith, innkeeper, or miller ).

2.    Next, you will need to write a one page description of your occupation. Be sure to include:

a.      the number of years you have to apprentice.

b.     the tools you need ?

c.     what services you will provide to the colonists ?

d.     a description of your work area/building.

e.     how much money you were paid ? How did you get paid ?

f.      how do you make the items you sell ?

g.     do you sell or make anything other than the main item ?

h.     who would use your services ?

i.       what special skills do you need to do your job ?

3.    Next, you will need to make a sign for your business. Things to remember:

a.     Signs were often made of symbols or pictures to represent the occupation. This was necessary for those who could not read back then.

b.     Signs were often shaped like the products they advertised. An example: a shoemaker’s sign may have been shaped like a shoe.

c.       Remember both sides of the sign were identical since they were usually hung on a pole extended from the side of the building. This enabled people walking from both directions to read the sign.

1. Tomorrow is the field trip. Chaperones may ride the bus. They do not need to arrive early as they have had to in years past.

2. Holiday Fair is on Thursday. We have had to move our time to 1:45-2:30. Children may attend after school with an adult. They need to have a note if they will be meeting you after school to attend the fair.

3. 12/23 Book report is due. Book jacket is the project

4. Colonial sign assignment has been given. It will be due the Friday January 9th. I will post the assignment on my blog

5. There will be after school study tomorrow. 

1. There will not be any Scholastic or Vocabulary this week

2. The Holiday Fair is Thursday, 12/4. Our class will be going to it at 1:00. You are welcome to join us.

3. Thank you for making time to come in to have a parent conference. The children have been doing a great job !!

4. Colonial sign project has been given. The sign will be due January 7th.

Excellent Native American posters !! The POWWOW was a great success !!

1. Remember- no school Tuesday and Wednesday is an early release day

2. We are responsible for a Coffee and Tea basket for the Holiday Fair. This will be one of the raffle items. If you are able to send in something for the raffle box ( along the coffee and tea line ) that would be great !!

3. We will be going to Old York Historical on December 2nd. If you are interested in chaperoning, please let me know.

1. Overall, the Social Studies test was a success. I will be offering a retake this coming Tuesday during recess for those who would like to improve their grade. 

1.There will be Scholastic this coming week.

2. Indian posters are due Friday, October 31st.

3. I have night conference times available on Tuesday October 28th at 5:15 and 7:00p.m. if anyone is interested. Otherwise, please email me a convenient day and time so we can schedule a parent conference.
